A direct contact water heater, comprises a stainless steel circular, oval, or rectangular casing 1, containing a water sprinkler 40 and gas burner 10. Water from the sprinkler 40 passes in direct heat exchange with the counter flowing combustion gases through three or more superposed creamic heat exchange elements 32 in the form of a grid (Figs. 2, 3 and 4) to prevent rectilinear flow of water therethrough, and through a screen 31. Water from the screen 31 passes either into a reservoir 8 surrounding the burner 10 and defined by the inner surface of the casing 1 and the protective inner wall 6 secured thereto, or into a central trough like reservoir 20 covering the burner 10, from which an outlet pipe 22 leads. The central reservoir 20 which is supported from wall 6 by members 21 is formed with a weir 24 to maintain a water level in it. Water flowing over the top of reservoir 8 or through discharge tube 26 also falls into the centre reservoir 20. A ring shaped burner element 16, formed with a plurality of orifices, is fed by an injector gas nozzle 11 through chamber 12 having interference plates 14 to promote gas/ air mixing. In modifications, the central reservoir may be formed as annular or trough like receptacles beneath cup shaped or rib shaped central covers (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
