1,149,746. Textile treating apparatus. ARTOS DR. ING. MEIER - WINDHORST K.G. 9 Sept., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 40353/66. Heading D1L. A method for the continuous transfer of substance between liquids and moving webs for the purpose of impregnating or removing substances from the web comprises impregnating the web at least twice, preferably three times, and squeezing the imregnated web at least twice, preferably three times, in the nips of a squeezing-roll arrangement, impregnation and squeezing being alternated, the impregnation being effected at least once, preferably twice, to the complete exclusion of air, directly at the outlet side of one of the nips, and the treating liquid being guided through the impregnation baths in the direction opposite to that in which the web travels. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises the combination of three relatively large diameter squeeze-rolls 11, 12, 13 in triangular or rectangular formation and one or more relatively small diameter squeeze rolls 18 arranged between the rolls 11, 12, 13 and forming a nip with each. The impregnation baths 21, 22, 23 are formed between the rolls and additional surfaces 27, 28 where necessary. The treating liquid is guided from the bath 21 to the bath 22 and from there to the bath 21. The larger diameter rolls are preferably made of steel and the smaller diameter roll preferably has an elastic material jacket e.g. polyamide material. Two of the larger diameter rolls may be stationarily mounted and the third, and fourth applicable, is movably mounted in parallel or swingable guides and is mechanically, pneumatically or hydraulically loaded.
