Abstract

1,149,040. Centrifugal blowers and pumps. TURBON VENTILATOREN-UND APPARATEBAU G.m.b.H. Sept 20, 1966, No.41878/66. Heading F1C. For the purpose of reducing noise in a centrifugal blower or pump, the collecting chamber situated between the impeller and the outer wall of the casing is partly divided into two parts radially by an intermediate wall the effective width of which increases with increasing angle encircling the impeller so as to occupy increasingly more of the width of the casing between the side walls. In the blower shown in Figs. 4 and 5, having a rectangular sheet-metal casing 21 provided with an inlet 22 and an outlet 23, the air collecting chamber surrounding the impeller 24 and afforded by the casing is partly divided into two parts by an intermediate wall 25. The wall 25 may be of the full width of the casing 21 from the end 126 adjacent the outlet 23 up to a line 27, and thereafter becomes progressively narrower, terminating at the other end 28 at about 270 degrees from the end 26 in a gentle curve towards the front wall of the casing. Instead of being concentric with the impeller 24 between the line 27 and the end 28, the wall 25 may be of spiral form. The rectangular casing may be replaced by one of normal volute form, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), and the intermediate wall, which extends concentrically around the impeller for nearly 360 degrees, may be divided into two separate walls, each of half the casing width at the beginning and tapering progressively in width towards the other end whereby the space between the walls progressively increases in width from zero to the full width of the casing. In a centrifugal pump for liquids, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the width of the intermediate wall decreases either continuously with a constant or variable slope or discontinuously in a number of separate steps. The intermediate wall may vary in thickness so that the cross-sectional area of the collecting chamber increases in the direction of flow.
