Abstract
1,148,269. Differential gearing. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 18 Jan., 1968 [7 Feb., 1967], No. 5914/67. Heading F2D. In a differential gear assembly, e.g. for a motor vehicle, a pair of bevel pinion gears 10, 12 which mesh with a pair of bevel side gears 14, 16 are carried by a cross-pin 40 mounted on a crown wheel 34 in opposed slots 46, 48 in which the pin can slide laterally and non-rotatably, such movement permitting self-alignment of the bevel gears. A two-part steel casing 22 surrounds the bevel gears and has a hardened partspherical internal surface 54 against which correspondingly shaped external surface portions 52 of the bevel gears engage. The casing parts have external flanges 30, 32 held together by bolts 28 which also secure the crown wheel to the casing. An H-shaped spacer plate 56, which limits misalignment of the side gears before insertion of drive shafts 18, 20, is carried by the cross-pin and has end scoops (not shown), extending through holes in the casing to impel oil into the interior thereof.
