Abstract

1,148,196. Pipe couplings; joint-making packing. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 17 March, 1967 [28 Sept., 1966], No. 43310/66. Headings F2B and F2G. A coupling for pipes 1, 2 of different diameters comprises a slightly resilient synthetic plastics sleeve 3 having spaced projections 8 defining two sockets 3A, 3B formed with annular recesses 6, 7 accommodating sealing rings 9, 17 which have the same overall length as the recesses and annular portions in which are disposed incompressible locking rings 13, 18. The locking ring 13 divides the sealing ring 9 into three parts, namely an annular head 14, Fig. 4, from which projects a flange 10 having annular ribs 11, an annular connecting portion 16 and an annular tail 15, the maximum thickness "X" of which exceeds the minimum thickness "Y" of the portion 16. Ingress of dirt to the gap betwen the socket 3A and pipe 1 is prevented by a cuff having an annular head 23 and flange 24. The sleeve when the socket 3B is dispensed with, may be sealed to the pipe 2 by an adhesive or bituminous tar, or integral therewith. The sealing ring 17 may be constructed as described in Specification 1,023,729.
