Abstract
1,147,970. Degassing Al or Al containing alloys. M.L.F. CHAMBERT. June 8, 1967 [June 17, 1966], No.26617/67. Heading C7D. Hydrogen is removed from molten Al or Al containing alloys by adding to the melt sulphur or a sulphur-containing compound which liberates S in the melt, in the absence of an oxidizing agent, heating the melt to a temperature such that the hydrogen and sulphur react to form H 2 S and holding the melt temperature for at least 4 hours. The S is preferably added in solid form by means of a bell or entrained in gas free from hydrogen and water vapour. Any aluminium sulphide formed is removed by skimming.
