Abstract

1,147,934. Garment pressing apparatus. S. F. JAMES. 4 Sept., 1967 [21 July, 1966], No. 32877/66. Heading D1A. Garment shaping apparatus comprises a base with a raised step having a concave edge, a movable former with a matching convex edge and of the same or slightly less thickness than the step and an ironing surface, with an edge of the same or greater concavity than the step equipped with a row of teeth, movable horizontally over the step. As shown, steam is fed to or suction is applied to the flat hollow base 40 of welded steel plates which comprises apertures (58) Fig. 5 (not shown) in side pieces 42, 43 and the central step 41 with two concave edges. The metal, wood or plastics formers 44, 45 have apertures 57 and are carried on arms 60 pivoted posts 47 on pieces 42, 43 each being biassed vertically to its disengaged position by a spring 62 surrounding post 47. If formers 44, 45 are movable only vertically, they are moved by a foot pedal. A conventionally heated hollow steam iron 48, e.g. of welded steel, has apertures 66 and two sets of teeth 50, 51 mounted in concave recesses 53, 54 at the sides and is pivoted on a post 64 resting at its front on a spring loaded plunger 65, e.g. a ball or roller, which normally lifts the iron off base 40. As the iron is pivoted across the base between stops 55, 56 in the arrangement shown the end teeth engage a sleeve on the former before the centre teeth. The perforations (58), 57, 66 are of corresponding patterns or very numerous so that steam from the iron can pass through the former and into the base.
