[Class 138 (ii)] A machine for pressing the sleeves of garments comprises opposed upright pressing members 2, 3 having relative pressing movement, a spatulate form 11, which is adapted to receive the sleeve of the article to be pressed and is movable into and out of position between the pressing members, and carrier means for the form operable to position the latter at different elevations relative to the pressing members. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the machine is provided with two pairs of pressing members 2, 3, each pair of which co-operates with a form 11. The two members 2 are supported by an arm 6 from a bracket 5 on a column 4 so that their outer substantially flat surfaces constitute the pressing faces. The outer pressing members 3, which are movable relatively to the pressing members 2, are also supported from the column 4 by pivoted arms 8 and are normally urged away from the members 2 by springs. The pressing members 2, 3, may be hollow and heated by steam. The forms 11 are of fiat metal plates tapered towards the upper ends and provided with a thin padding 12 which, when the sleeve is withdrawn from the form, is moved relatively to the form against the action of springs 13, Fig. 6, so as to ease the padding from the form and facilitate the removal of the sleeve. An extension 14 on the form co-operates with a clamp in order to hold the sleeve in position. The forms are carried by a platform 15, which is connected by a pair of parallel links 18 to a base 16 movable along fixed vertical guides 17. The platform can be moved manually so as to shift the forms 11 from a position in which they are clear of the pressing members 2, 3 into a position in which they are disposed between the members 2, 3 for the pressing operation. The rearward movement of the platform towards the pressing position is limited by a stop 15a in the form of a roller which engages the column 4. A second stop 19 limits the reverse movement of the platform by engaging a guide 17. The pressing members 2, 3 are of sufficient height to press short sleeves only, so that, in order to press longer sleeves, two pressing operations are necessary, and a vertical elevation or lowering of the platform must be effected to bring the unpressed portion of the sleeve into pressing position. This vertical movement is permitted by connecting the base member 16 of the platform 15 to a cable 25 which passes over a pulley 27 on the frame and is attached to a pivoted counterweight-lever 22. The pressing members 3 are moved. into pressing position against the action of the springs by air pressure applied to diaphragm chambers 29 carried by the frame. The diaphragms in the chambers 29 operate through plungers or slides 30 against the outer sides of the pressing members so as to compress the work on the form 11 ; the flow of air to and from the diaphragms is controlled by a valve 31 operated by a pedal 32. The machine is enclosed in a cabinet which is formed in the front and top walls with slots 10 arranged in alignment with the spaces between each pair of pressing members 2, 3 so as to permit the passage of the forms 11.
