Abstract

1,147,907. Anodizing aluminium. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. June 13, 1966 [June 22, 1965], No. 26170/66. Heading C7B. A process for producing a coloured anodized aluminium article comprises anodizing the article in an aqueous H 2 SO 4 electrolyte to produce a colourless anodic oxide coating on its surface and subsequently anodizing the article in an aqueous electrolyte containing 0À1% to 4% by weight of H 2 SO 4 and sulphosalicylic acid, sulphophthalic acid, sulphoresorcinol or lignosulphonic acid in an amount of at least 20 g/l to produce an integrallycoloured anodic oixde coating on the surface of the article. The term aluminium includes Al base alloys, e. g. Al containing Cr or Si. Prior to anodizing, the A1 article may be cleaned with aqueous solutions of (1) an alkaline cleaner, (2) HNO 3 and (3) NaOH. During the anodizing step to produce the coloured coating, a constant current density may be used until some predetermined maximum voltage is reached after which that voltage is maintained constant until the anodizing is completed. After anodizing, the article may be sealed by dipping it in an aqueous solution at 200‹ F. of sodium lignosulphonate and nickel acetate.
