A surgical dressing for an animal comprises a piece of material adapted to cover a wounded part of the body of the animal, that part of the piece which is to be positioned over the wound itself having a pocket or like receptacle for locating and/or retaining a disposable absorbent pad. The piece of material is provided with means for securing it to the body of the animal and with a slit or other aperture adapted, when the dressing is fitted, for passage of the head, an ear, the tail or at least one limb of the animal. The piece of material may be provided with waterproofing means either by being made of waterproofed material or by being lined or partly lined with waterproof material, for example polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, or natural or synthetic rubber. The piece of material may be rectangular and may be provided with attachment members for securing the piece to the animal; the attachment members may be tie strips, strips of elastic, or fastening means, for example safety pins, press-studs, or hooks and eyes. Elastic inserts may be provided in order that the dressing may be shaped to the body of the animal. The parts of the dressing which will be external and visible when the dressing is applied to the animal may be made from decorative materials, for example brocades, tartans or silk. The dressing may be incorporated with or attachable to a conventional animal coat. The pocket may comprise a strip of material the edges of which are sewn either to the piece of material or to an additional piece of material which is attached to the piece of material. The dressing may include a disposable absorbent pad which may be water-soluble and which may be treated with an antiseptic or medicament.
