Abstract

1,145,413. Variable resistors. STACKPOLE CARBON CO. 23 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 8835/68. Heading H1S. A variable resistor comprises a housing 1 containing a straight line resistance element 4, a parallel metal current collecting strip (5), a slide 9 carrying electric contacts 11 (and 12) which engage the element 4 and the strip (5), a button 10 projecting upwards from the slide 9 through a longitudinal slot 2, a lead screw 16, a member 13 projecting from the slide 9 through a longitudinal slot 3 and a gear-wheel 15, meshing with the screw 16 mounted in the member 13 but retarded from rotating therein by a friction member such as a spring 21 bearing on its face. The gear-wheel rotates to allow the slide 9 to be adjusted by hand by the button 10 but remains stationary to permit adjustment by rotation of the lead screw either manually or by a motor 19.
