Abstract

1360357 Current collecting GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 31 Aug 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40326/72 Heading H2A Sparking at a brush/commutator contact is reduced by metal oxide varistor material, the material providing a low resistance current path at the moment a brush and commutator segment part contact, but rapidly increasing its resistance as the current level falls. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the material is incorporated directly into a carbon brush 10 at its trailing edge 12, but in Fig. 3 (not shown) the material is independent (21) and separately spring loaded (22) to counteract differing wear rates. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the entire brush holder 15 is formed of such material, and is maintained in contact with the commutator by a spring 17. In Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the material forms only part of the holder (15a), or is separately attached to a holder (15b). The varistor material is a polycrystalline ceramic, e.g. zinc oxide with the addition of bismuth, aluminium, iron, magnesium or calcium oxides.
