Abstract

1,142,645. Electron beam magnetic focusing system. VICKERS Ltd. 9 May, 1967 [13 May, 1966], No. 21493/66. Heading H1D. An electron gun, as used in electron beam welding for example, comprises a directly heated cathode 2 and an anode, the gun further comprising a shield 6 of magnetic material (of iron or mild steel of permeability 50 for example) formed with a passageway 5 of circular crosssection, the axis of which is the electron beam axis of the gun, the centre of the upstream end of the passageway being spaced downstream from the cathode by a distance not greater than the radius of said circular cross-section, whereby deflection of the electron beam by the magnetic field of the cathode current is reduced. Wehnett cylinder 3 may itself serve as the shield, if of magnetic material. Shield 6, electrode 3 and aperture 5 may be of 2cms., 9 cms., and 3 mms. diameter respectively.
