Abstract

An air heater comprises an air duct 19 in which is arranged a heat exchanger supplied with hot gases from a combustion chamber 20 fired by a burner 22. The air heater is intended for connection to an air supply duct 10 through which air is forced by a fan 13 driven by an internal-combustion engine 11, the air being thus preheated by compression in the fan and by contact with the I.C. engine before receiving further heat as it passes over the flue tubes 28a, 28b of the heat exchanger. The combustion air flow is aided by a fan 24 driven by an electric motor 23 or by the I.C. engine 11. The burner gas flow through the tubes 28a, 28b may be in parallel as shown or in series (Fig. 3). In further forms (Figs. 4 and 5), the I.C. engine (11) and fan (13) are downstream of the heat exchanger. The fan induces an air flow through the air duct (19) which is connected to the fan duct (10) by a flexible connection (32, Fig. 4) or two connections (41, 42, Fig. 5). The induced air flow enters the duct 10 in a direction inclined to its axis. The heated air may be used for the drying of crops, ships or buildings. Mechanical, electrical or electronic equipment may be provided for cutting off the fuel supply to the burner 22 if the flame is extinguished. The flame is ignited by an electrical or flame igniter 25. Fuel supply to the burner and hence the heated air temperature is controlled manually or by a thermostat in the air passage 19.
