Abstract

1,141,973. Vacuum furnaces. ALCO STANDARD CORP. 16 Oct., 1967 [18 Jan., 1967], No. 47095/67. Heading F4B. A vacuum furnace 10 is provided with elongated hearth bars 23 of graphite, tungsten or molybdenum for supporting workpieces 20, each bar being provided with a ceramic cap 24 to prevent diffusion between it and the workpieces. The caps may be in the form of segmented tubular rollers disposed in a longitudinal slot in the hearth bar, which is supported at its ends in the furnace side walls 15, and also by graphite posts 26 extending up from the furnace bottom 14. A casing 29 containing ceramic material prevents heat losses through the ends of the hearth bars, a foamed zirconia wafer (36, Fig. 2, not shown), likewise preventing heat loss through the posts 26 on which the bars 23 detachably rest. In a modification (Figs. 6 to 8, not shown), the hearth bars are supported solely by the posts, which may be provided with ceramic jackets and rest on adjustment screws to allow for levelling of the bars. In this embodiment the ceramic caps are in the form of U- shaped segmental blocks telescoped over the bars and separated from them by a layer of graphite felt.
