Abstract

974,070. Thermocouples. G. S. BECHAM. June 7 1963 [June 7,1962] No. 22810/63. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H1] A thermocouple 10 has a series of at least two insulating sections of refractory material 14, 14-1, 14-2, disposed along the wires 12, 13 to maintain them in mutually spaced relation, and at least one metal element 16 supported adjacent at least one of the wires so that it projects into a space 15 between two adjacent insulating sections, the element being formed of a material of lower melting point than wires 12, 13. The device is to be used in a furnace in which the walls are liable to erosion. When the wall erodes to the level of space 15 elements 16 melt to unite the wires and form a new hot junction at the new wall surface. Elements 16 may be wires or strips, as shown, extending into enlarged ends of sections 14, or may be tubes surrounding wires 12, 13. If the thermocouple is to be mounted vertically the upper end of each section 14 may be hollowed out to retain the molten material of elements 16 until the wires are united. Wires 12 and 13 are preferably of platinum and platinum-rhodium or platinum-iridium alloy. Elements 16 may be of palladium.
