Abstract

1,030,649. Radiation shields. PACIFIC SCIENTIFIC CO. Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug. 15, 1963], No. 31266/64. Heading F4B. A vacuum furnace comprises a cylindrical liquid-cooled casing 1, 1<SP>1</SP> having within it a plurality of coaxial, mutually spaced cylindrical radiation heat shields 10, each with projecting ribs 11 engaging an adjacent shield, thereby stiffening and spacing the shields which surround a hearth 5 and heating elements 8. The shields may be formed from sections having vertical folded joints therebetween, Fig. 3 (not shown), and may also be formed from vertically disposed overlapping sections, Fig. 4 (not shown). Pins 23 project from the casing and pass through holes in the shields to provide support. The casing 1, 1<SP>1</SP> has flanges abutting on to similar flanges of dome-shaped top and bottom casing sections, the bottom section being adapted to be lowered from the casing 1, 1<SP>1</SP>.
