Abstract

1283953 Heat insulated pipe ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 17 June 1970 [19 June 1969] 30996/69 Heading F2P [Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a wall for a hot fluid stream in which provision is made for twodimensional expansion, and is described with reference to a jet pipe (1) of a gas turbine engine, the jet pipe being of double-wall form to provide an annular passage (4) for flow of cooling air. Combustion equipment is indicated at (2). A heat shield 3 is disposed adjacent the reheat combustion zone and comprises a series of " flat " portions 16a which are interconnected by circumferentially-extending folds 16, the folds being shaped to provide narrow gaps 17 which gaps tend to become closed when the heat shield is at operating temperature. The " flat " portions are of cylindrical form, being flat as compared with the folds. The folds are formed with a base portion 19 which is connected by means of rivets 23 to the jet pipe. The heat shield is also formed with corrugations 11 which extend at right angles to the folds (see Fig. 4), the corrugations extending in both the flat portions and in the folds. The corrugations are formed by electro-chemically machining grooves 12, 13 into the material of the heat shield. The heat shield is first formed into the shape A, Fig. 5, the grooves 12, 13 are then formed by machining, and the material is formed into the shape B to form the fold and the narrow gap 17. In Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), two heat shields are provided, the inner heat shield having folds which extend circumferentially and corrugations which extend longitudinally as in Fig. 1, while the outer heat shield has folds which extend longitudinally and corrugations which extend circumferentially. The inner and outer heat shields are interconnected by rivets such as 23.
