Abstract

1,007,956. Electric furnaces. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 3, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13168/63. Addition to 1,002,679. Heading H5H. An electric furnace, e.g. of the type described in the parent Specification includes a resistance heating element associated with a reflector to produce in operation, a convergent heating beam. As shown, a furnace unit comprises a reflector 13 having a cross-section in the form of an elliptic arc; the heating element 14 is positioned along one focal line of the ellipse, so that the heating beam converges on the second focal line. A plurality of such units may be connected together edge-to-edge to form a configuration having a common second focal line (Fig. 3, not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the convergent heating beam is produced by a secondary parabolic reflector 17 which receives substantially parallel heating beams from a number of units, each constituted by a parabolic reflector 15 and a heating element 16.
