Abstract

1,141,787. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. 19 Jan., 1968, No. 2958/68. Heading D1G. A cutter blade in a sewing machine is mounted on a carrier block for movements towards and away from a working surface, the blade being so connected movably relative to the block as to permit self aligning of the blade relative to said surface. The non-rotatable piston rod 36 of a pneumatic cylinder has a screwed end 50 engaged with a screwed bore 54 in a block 56 and secured to the latter by a locknut 52. Block 56 is formed with a recess 58 which has a flat inner end surface 60 and which defines legs 62, 64. Recess 58 houses a knife blade 66 seated against leg 64, and a resilient pad 68 seated against leg 62. Blade 66 has a cutting edge 74, and an arcuate edge 76 bearing against surface 60. Blade 66 and pad 68 are secured to block 56 by screws 70 which pass through clearance holes 72 in blade 66. The axis of rod 36 is inclined at an angle of about 75 degrees to the work-supporting surface behind the presser foot. The arrangement is thereby such that blade 66, on striking said surface, can rock about edge 76 to engage edge 74 fully with said surface, and blade 66 can also move laterally by compressing pad 68 to relieve the shock of impact with said surface.
