[Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXII] In a portable machine for cutting sheet-material of the type comprising a base 1 adapted to be drawn over the surface of the sheet and supporting a motor 2 which drives a crank operating a vertically - reciprocating plunger 15 carrying a saw, chisel, or other cutting-tool 28, the plunger carries at its lower end a freely-swivelling tool - carrier 24 and is longitudinally extensible between the carrier and the top end which is connected to the driving crank, so that by altering the length of the plunger the tool may be adjusted to and from the work. In the machine shown, the motor drives through a belt a spindle journalled in the upper end of a standard 8 and bracket 9, secured to it, the spindle carrying at its end a disc 10 on which is pivoted a triangular plate 11 carrying a crank-pin 19, driving through a link 18 the plunger 15. The stroke of the plunger may be varied by adjustment of the plate 11 about its pivot 12 on the disc 10. The plunger consists of an upper part 20 screwed into a lower part 15, so that rotation of the latter by means of a disc 23 adjusts the length of the plunger, the two parts being locked in adjusted position by a wing-nut 22 with a coned bore bearing on the upper end of the part 15, which is split at 21. The tool 28 operates through the slotted foot 27 of a tool-guide 26 which extends through a groove in the end of the tool-holder 24 and is secured to a sleeve 29 freely rotatable on a sleeve 16 through which the plunger operates, so that the tool is free to swing about the plunger to cut sharp curves. The disc 23 is cupped to catch oil dropping from the plunger sleeve. Operating handles 32 are provided.
