The tool 18 of a slotting machine is fed on its cutting stroke by a hydraulic cylinder 1 carrying pins 14 engaging slots in the cutter holder 12, which is pivoted about a pin 14 by a spring 20 to press the upper end of the cutter - bar 13 against a bevelled relief member 15 attached to the cylinder 1 at 21. On the reverse stroke, a piston 9 is moved upwardly to oscillate a link 10, thus depressing the holder 12 and relieving the tool.
