In a double or single wedge-ended planer, the cutter heads are mounted on a frame 17, 18, 23, 24 that slidably supports a carriage 27 containing the cylinder 19 of the double-acting propulsion apparatus the piston rod 20 of which abuts but is not connected to the frame. A pad 39 is provided on the side of the cutter head 14 facing the seam adjacent each cutter 12 which is pivotally mounted on the head, the cutter being laterally angularly adjustable with respect to the pad.
