In an apparatus for feeding tobacco for forming a continuous strand in a groove 22 of a rotating suction conveyer drum 21, tobacco picked off a spiked roller 1 by a beater roller 2 is pneumatically conveyed and accelerated in a suction nozzle 3 and a pipe 4 and passes an inertia separator 5 to an opening 8 where it enters a flow chamber 12 as a jet of tobacco 39 in which it is further accelerated by the suction applied to the drum 21 and forms a strand thereon. A fan 9 provides suction via a jacket 7 to the separator 5, the exhausted air being passed by the fan 9 to another inertia separator 31 which leads to a pipe 3 feeding into the nozzle 3. Air exhausted through the drum 21 is similarly fed to an inertia separator 34. The chamber 12 includes an upper wall 15, with air inlet openings 18 controlled by flaps 19, and terminates in a resilient plate 17. Opening of the flaps 19 deflects the jet of tobacco 39 downwards and may be augmented by the application of suction through ports (20) in the lower wall 16 of the chamber 12 (Fig. 4), and such adjustment alters the angle α between the plane of the crosssectional area 40, where the tobacco builds up on the drum 21, and the tangent to the drum surface at the line of impact with the jet 39 as shown. The optimum value of the angle α depends on the quality, especially the fibre length, of the tobacco used. Trimming wheels 36, 37 may be associated with the drum 21.
