Abstract

1,037,695. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. June 4, 1963 [June 11, 1962], No. 22196/63. Heading A2C. To effect separation of heavy tobacco particles, stems and impurities from a stream of tobacco fed from a hopper A to a continuous rod forming device 29, two air jets 115, 215 are directed around a hollow body 11 across a stream of tobacco, the stems falling through a duct 18 to a container 19 while selected tobacco passes over a screen 8 and through a duct 10 on to a conveyer belt 23 in a hopper 22. The tobacco is fed from the hopper by a carded drum 1 which co-operates with a rotating rake 4 and a second carding drum 2. The drum 2 is cleaned by a drum 6. The tobacco from the drum 1 is thrown by a roller 7 towards the duct 10 where it encounters the air streams from the jets 115, 215. Jet 115 is directed slightly towards wall 9 of the duct 10 and jet 215 is directed slightly towards the screen 8 which is adjustable to vary the opening of the duct 10. The hollow body 11 is provided with perforations through which air may be blown by opening valves 116, 216. The air is supplied to the jets from a duct 12 which separates into two ducts 112, 212. The duct 12 is connected to a blower 13 which sucks air from the atmosphere through duct 20 and from the hopper 22 through a duct 21. A further blower 25 extracts air from the hopper 22 through a duct 24. The side of the screen 8 facing the roller 7 may be provided with serrations (Fig. 3, not shown).
