Abstract
1,141,295. Metal melting furnaces. WEST MIDLANDS GAS BOARD. 6 May, 1966 [6 Feb., 1965], No. 5241/65. Heading F4B. A metal melting furnace comprises a preheating shaft 6 feeding metal on to an upper sloping V-shaped hearth 9 in a superheat chamber 7, a lower V-shaped hearth 16 feeding a taphole 17, and high pressure burners 19 and 20 respectively playing over the upper end of hearth 9 and over the lower hearth near the taphole. The ends of upper hearth 9 terminate short of the furnace walls leaving spaces 12 and 14 completing a circulatory path for the combustion gases from the burners. The shaft 6 is of rhomboidal cross-section similar to, but larger than, that of standard copper ingots to allow of the escape of waste gases.
