Abstract
PURPOSE: To increase the rate of dissolution of scrap iron remaining near the hearth of the cold zone of an arc furnace by blowing an oxidizing gas, a reducing gas and an inert gas respectively selectively from the position blow the slag line of the cold zone according to the respective operation stages from charging of scrap ion up to tapping.
CONSTITUTION: Right after charging of scrap iron, that is, from a firing period till a main melting period, an oxidizing gas and a reducing gas are blown into the furnace through nozzles 8, and these are blown directly to the scrap iron 4 remaining in a cold zone 3 to accelerate the melting of the scrap iron 4 by the heat of combustion. Next, since the formation of the well of molten steel 9 in a hearth 7, the oxidizing gas and the reducing ga or an inert gas or the inert gas and a recarburizer are blown through the nozzles 8 to accelerate the melting of the undissolved scrap iron 4. Next, in the case of reducing and refining the iron in an arc furnace, the inert gas or the reducing gas is blown into the molten steel 9 in the period from the end period of a heating till tapping, whereby the steel 9 is agitated and the refining is accelerated. In case double pipes are used for the nozzles 8, the oxidizing gas is blown through the inside pipes and the reducing gas through the outside pipes.
