Abstract

1,141, 284. Bright acid tin electro-plating baths. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 10, 1966 [Feb. 13, 1965], No. 5878/66. Heading C7B. An acid tin electro-plating bath contains stannous ions, a reducing agent, a non-ionic surfactant and a brightener which is an aromatic or heterocyclic aldehyde, the aldehyde group being linked directly to the aromatic ring or heterocyclic group which is either unsubstituted or contains a non- ionizable substituent not reducible in solution to an ionizable form, the aromatic ring not being hydrogenated. Examples of suitable aldehydes specified are benzaldehyde which may be substituted by one or more of hydroxy, chloro, methoxy or ethoxy groups, salicylaldehyde, protocatechualdehyde, thiophene-2-aldehyde and indole-3-aldehyde. The bath may be a sulphate or fluoborate bath and may contain formaldehyde as reducing agent, and an ethylene oxide-alkylphenol condensate as surfactant. Reference is also made without giving an example of the inclusion of a sulphonate. Articles plated with tin from these baths at room temperature had a uniform glass after a brief dip in aqueous NaOH solution at 80‹C,
