Abstract
1,141,283. Bright acid tin electro-plating baths. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 10, 1966 [Feb. 13, 1965], No.5877/66. Heading C7B. An acid tin electro-plating bath contains in addition to stannous ions, fluoborate or sulphate or a combination of sulphate and sulphonate anions, a non-ionic surfactant, and a reducing agent, an organic brightener of the formula wherein either R 1 , R 2 and R 4 which may be the same or different are hydrogen or aromatic or heterocyclic groups which may be wholly or partly hydrogenated or aliphatic groups, the groups being unsubstituted or containing non-ionizable substituents which also are not reducible in the bath to ionizable forms, and wherein R 3 is hydrogen, or an alkyl or an esterified carboxylic groups; or R 1 and R 2 together with - C form a ring system or | R 1 and R 3 together with - C = C form a ring system | in which the group - C C - is purely unsaturated, i. e. is not part of an aromatic ring or a resonating bond in a heterocyclic ring; but; excluding a compound in which one of the radicals R 1 and R 2 is an aromatic, hydrogenated aromatic or heterocyclic group and the other is hydrogen, R 3 is hydrogen, and R 4 is hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkoxy group. Examples of suitable aldehydes specified are 2:4 -hexadienal (IV), 2-formylcyclohexa - 2:4 -diene and its 1-methyl derivatives (I and II) α- acetyl-cinnamic acid ethyl ester (XII), α-ethylcinnamaldehyde (III), vinyl phenyl ketone (VIII), 2-benzalcyclohexanone (VII), benzalacetophenone (styryl phenyl ketone) (VI), p-chlorophenyl styryl ketone (XI), p-tolyl styryl ketone (XII), 3-formyl- 5:6 -dihydro-2:6 -dimethylpyran (V), 2-cinnamoylthiophene (IX), and 2-(w-benzoyl) - vinylfuran (X). The bath may be a fluoborate bath containing free acid or a bath containing stannous sulphate and either sulphuric acid or benzene-m-disulphonic acid, and may contain formaldehyde as reducing agent and an ethylene oxide-alkylphenol condensate as surfactant.
