Abstract
1,140,762. Carding machines. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 5 July, 1966, No. 30066/66. Heading D1N. Fibrous web W on a first rotatable surface e.g. on the doffing cylinder of a carding engine, passes about the free end 28 of an adjustable and spring biassed nip blade 22 engaging a second rotatable surface (e.g. of a doffing roller 14) closely approaching the first rotatable surface and then between blade 22 and the second surface before passing through a pair of pressure rollers 30, 32 where the waste particles are crushed; a single roller may engage against roller 14 (see Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) to form the waste crushing nip. Doffing roller 14 may be fluted, knurled, engraved, etched or sand blasted; if fluted the flutes may have a slight spiral. Alternatively the roller surface may be of natural or synthetic rubber, leather or leather like material. In Fig. 3, not shown the roller is card clothed and may alternately be clothed with plush or pile. The blade 20 may be curved (Fig. 2, not shown) and it may be arranged above the roller 14 in which case the direction of rotation of roller 14 is reversed. In Fig. 6 not shown a plate is provided to guide the web from roller 14 to the waste crushing rollers; other means such as a conveyor or air streams may replace this plate. The surface speed of doffing roller 14 may be equal to the surface speed of cylinder 10 or may be greater in which case draft is applied to the fibres. Examples of particular arrangements are given with full numerical data. The web treated may be of natural, synthetic or mixed fibres of textile length and there may be added thereto short fibres e.g. less than #" e.g. woodpulp and wood fibres, cotton linters, cotton hull shavings fibres, and mineral fibres such as asbestos, glass and rock wool.
