Abstract

1,075,238. Forming fibre webs. RUMBOLD A.B. Aug. 21, 1964 [Feb. 28, 1964], No. 34251/64. Heading D1N. A machine for producing fibre webs from pulp includes a defibrator comprising a rotatable toothed roll and a support ledge over which pulp web is fed, the ledge being made from a material that can be worked by the roll and which is milled or abraded by the roll so as to show grooves through which the teeth of the roll pass. The defribrating roll housed within a casing 1 is hollow and air is passed through to cool it. The air employed passes in circuit through a perforated plate 15 where fibres torn from the pulp web are drawn onto an airpermeable cellulose web 29 of width slightly more than twice that of a carrier belt 16 and of a duct 14 down which the fibres are drawn. Folding plates 32 connected to the plate 15 serve to turn the edges of the cellulose web in a manner to wrap around the fibres resting upon it. The support ledge against which the defibrating roll operates is preferably formed from a reinforced plastics material, such as a phenolformaldehyde resin reinforced with fabric. The edge of the ledge nearest the roll is milled by pressure of the ledge against the roll and this edge, over which the supply web of pulp is passed, is rounded to a degree which depends on the moisture content of the pulp web, stiffness and cohesion of the web being dependent on its moisture content.
