Abstract
114,022. Dunwoody, J. E. March 14, 1917. Cartridge magazines. -Relates to machines for charging magazines of the type used in the Lewis gun, and consists in providing a hopper a for service cartridge clips b, the cartridges being pushed from a clip into a magazine-feeding shoot f by a reciprocating plunger c, the return stroke of which ejects the empty clip. The mechanism for operating the plunger may also rotate the magazine step by step. In the form shown, the magazine centre g is keyed to a spindle e<1> projecting from the frame e of the machine. The plunger c is connected, through a slot a<1> in the hopper a, with a handle d forming one arm of a spring-controlled bell-crank lever, the other arm d' of which is connected by a link l with an arm k. This arm is pivoted concentrically with the magazine and carries a spring-controlled pawl k<4> for engaging the recesses g' in the periphery of the pan to impart to it a step-by-step rotation. The cartridges leave the shoot f by an exit which registers with the opening in the magazine centre leading to the usual spiral groove which guides the bullet ends of the cartridges, the base ends of the cartridges being supported on a plate h. A disk p' bears upon the cartridges in the pan and is carried by a lever q having notches q<3> to engage and lock the lever d<1> if a cartridge is missed. In these circumstances, the disk p<1> falls and holds up the cartridges in the shoot. The machine is provided with a spike n to stick in the ground and a clamp o to fit on the side cartridge box.
