Abstract

117,908. Bennie, J. April 30, 1917. Cartridge magazines, charging. - Relates to means for feeding cartridges, one at a time, into magazines for machine guns, and consists in preventing a miss-feed by employing a spring-actuated pawl or finger which allows the feed movement of the magazine to take place only when a cartridge being delivered into the magazine displaces the pawl or finger from the path of the magazine feed mechanism. Fig. 2 shows in plan a machine provided with a horizontal spindle 2 to receive a magazine as used in the Lewis gun. The rotation of a shaft 19 by a handle 20 operates (1) through a crank-pin 17, connecting-rod 16, slide 15, and bell-crank 12 to reciprocate a cartridge-inserting plunger 4, and (2) through the eccentric 18 and oscillating ratchet-lever 21 to rotate step by step the pan of the magazine. The cartridges are placed in a hopper 6, the outlet from which is immediately in front of the plunger 4. The movement of the cartridges in the hopper is facilitated by a reciprocating curved wall 10 connected by a link 11 to the plunger 4. To prevent a miss-feed, a stop 26, operated by a spring-controlled lever 27 having a depending portion 29 extending over the cartridge exit, moves into the path of the pan feed lever 21, when the supply of cartridges is interrupted. A spring 31 presses against the magazine and acts as a brake.
