Abstract

130,098. Northover, H. R. Nov. 3, 1916. Cartridge magazines.-Relates to machines for filling the cartridge magazines used in the Lewis gun, and consists in preventing miss-feeds by employing an automatic stop-mechanism which allows rotation of the magazine pan only after a cartridge has been introduced into the magazine. The invention is shown in elevation in Fig. 3 and in plan in Fig. 1 applied to the filling machine described in Specification 126,033, in which the magazine centre block p carrying the rotary pan o is keyed in position on a post q so that its opening registers with the exit opening e from the guide e<1> leading from the cartridge hopper. The cartridges are pushed into the pan and the pan rotated step by step by turning a hand-crank c<1>, which rotates a shaft c through the medium of a spring-controlled clutch c<2> yielding under abnor. mal resistance, and which, through a crank b' and connecting-rod b, reciprocates a plunger a which pushes the lowermost cartridge through the opening e into the magazine, the weight of the other cartridges in the guide e<1> being supported by a plate d' carried by the plunger. The shaft c also, through an eccentric d<3>, oscillates a lever d, and, through a pawl d<1>, rotates the magazine pan one step at a time after the cartridge is inserted. According to the present invention, the feedplunger a is automatically stopped by a pin j<20>, as shown in Fig. 3, when the, cartridges for any reason do not fall into proper position to be acted upon by the plunger. The stop-pin j<20> is carried on a lever j<4> moving on a pivot j<11> and connected to the weighted end j<5> of a second lever j<3>, the other end of which carries a platform j<6> acted on by the weight of cartridges in the hopper guide to hold the stop j<20> normally inoperative.
