Abstract
2332. Farquhar, M. G., and Hill, A. H. Jan. 29. Machine guns.-Relates to feed-mechanism, and consists in a two-part spring - actuated f e e d - wheel, which is rotated step by step as the cartridges are fed into the barrel chamber, and the spring of which is automatically rewound by ratchet mechanism after each discharge of the gun. The feed-wheel comprises an outer and an inner drum a, a<2>, the latter being connected to the spindle c by a spring d, and to the outer drum by a sliding clutch member e. When the member e is moved to the left, its teeth e<2> become disengaged from teeth on the drum a, while a second set of clutch teeth e<3> engage with teeth on a collar f fixed to the spindle c. The spring d is thus prevented from running-down while the drum a is being run backwards to withdraw the belt from the gun. A ratchet lever k, k<2> is actuated by a projection i<2> on the sliding cover i of the gun after each discharge, and rotates the spindle c, through the ratchet disk l, in the direction to wind up the spring d. The drum a may have projections a<1> to engage the cartridge belt, or may have receivers for transferring cartridges from a magazine or hopper into the gun.
