Machine guns; belts and magazines.-Relates to recoil-operated guns adapted to use a belt or a drum magazine as described in the parent Specification, and consists in so arranging the feed mechanisms that the driving pin 4, Figs. 1 and 2, of the drum feed, or the driving-pin 29<a>, Fig. 4, of the belt feed, fit into the same recess 6 in the side of the barrel 1. When the drum feed is in position, the recoiling barrel 1 by its engagement with the pin 4 moves a slide 3 backwards and forwards, and a pin 5 at the other end of the slide fitting into an oblique slot 7 in a lever 8 rocks that lever about its fulcrum 10 and thereby operates the drum feed step by step. The drum 11 is rotated by a pawl 15 on the lever 8; a pawl 14a thrown in and out of action by a pin 19 on the lever 8 stops the drum at each forward step; and a pawl 14 prevents backward rotation. The cartridges are passed by a device 13 from the drum to a recess from which they are taken and supplied to the barrel by the usual cartridge carrier 18 of the breech mechanism. When the belt feed is in position, a bell-crank lever 27, 29 engages by a finger 27a on the arm 27 with a feed slide 26, and by a pin 29<a> on the other arm 29 with the recess 6 in the barrel 1. The rest of the mechanism is as usual. The drum feed and the belt feed are detachably secured to the gun by transverse bolts 16, 17.
