Abstract

1,140,020. Tiltable lifting - tongs. HEPPENSTALL CO. 13 Nov., 1967 [12 July, 1967], No. 51633/67. Heading B8H. A lifting tongs for coils of metal 18, Fig. 1, is suspended by cables 105 and roller chains 107 from a tilting device 74 which tilts the tongs through any angle up to 90 degrees whilst the tongs are suspended. The tilting device 74, Fig. 5, comprises co-axial sprockets and pulleys 96, 97 driven by a motor 85 through reduction gears 89, and a pair of idler sprockets and pulleys 102, 103. The cable 105 and chains 107 are entrained round these pulleys and sprockets and are driven to tilt the tongs to which they are attached at 52, 70, Fig. 1. The distance between fixed and movable jaws 12, 17, Fig. 3, of the tongs is adjusted by a screw 25 and nut 23 driven by a motor 35. The movable jaw is also moved to apply the grip as the tongs are raised by a lever arm 50 pivoted to the frame of the tongs at 53 and to the movable jaw at 45. A shaft 66, to which the cables and chains are attached at 70, is adjustably slidable in the arm 60 of the tongs frame. U.S.A. Specification 3,076,674 referred to describes how the screw 25 is braked against inadvertent rotation.
