Abstract

1,139,442. Bearings. INA-NEEDLE BEARINGS Ltd. 22 Feb., 1967 [22 Feb., 1966], No. 7811/66. Heading F2A. A needle bearing has a cage and a flexible annular sealing member which is located between the cage and a radially-extending flange at one end of the bearing. In an embodiment, a needle bearing has a hardened shell 1, Fig. 1 having needles 2 located by a cage 3. A flexible annular member 4 is forced through the shell 1, and into abutment with an inwardly-directed flange 9 at one end thereof. The cage 3 is then positioned in the shell 1 and is retained therein by the forming of an inwardly-directed flange 6 at the other end thereof. The flexible annular member 4 seals a shaft mounted in the bearing, and is made of synthetic rubber or plastics material. In a modification, the flexible annular member 4 has a steel shroud 5 bonded thereto, the latter having a radially-inwardly directed flange 10, Fig. 2; one end of the shell 1 is completely closed and the flexible annular member 4, which may be provided with a shroud 5 located adjacent the open end of the shell; flexible annular members 4, 5 with or without shrouds 5 are provided at both ends of the bearing; and flanges 9 and 6, Fig. 7, are provided with axiallyextending portions 8 which fit into recesses in flexible annular members 4.
