Abstract

1,138,945. Polyacrylonitrile filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 2 May, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 18462/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Polyacrylonitrile filaments, fibres or threads stabilized against thermal discoloration are produced from spinning solutions to which has been added, as stabilizer, maleamic acid or an N - monosubstituted maleamic acid, e.g. an N-methyl, -ethyl, -CO-NH 2 or -phenyl derivative. The stabilizer may be at least partially neutralized, e.g. with NaOH, before being added. The polyacrylonitrile may be a homopolymer or a copolymer containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile units. In an Example, the polyacrylonitrile is dissolved in concentrated aqueous sodium thiocyanate, the stabilizer added is maleuric acid, and the spinning dope is extruded into filaments in a dilute solution of the thiocyanate salt, the filaments then being stretched and dried.
