Coal in situ along a face is wetted before being mined by injecting liquid into coal 8 lining a or each gate 2a at a point or points 7, 8, 9 in the gate somewhat ahead of the face so that the injected liquid soaks through cracks formed in the coal immediately inwards of the gate and face by stress changes in the coal as coal is removed from the gate and mined from the face.
