Abstract

1,106,744. Solution mining. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 24 May, 1965 [10 June, 1964- No. 21921/65. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F4] An underground cavity for the storage of liquids is formed in a soluble subterranean layer by means of two boreholes into which a non-solvent is admitted under pressure to produce a fracture between the boreholes, and a solvent is then passed along the fracture to dissolve the layer and form the cavity. A symmetrical roof for the cavity is achieved by use of a non-solvent less dense than the solvent to form a "blanket" between high spots on the roof and the solvent to preclude further dissolution, the non-solvent being held in a reservoir at one bore hole at least and at a level corresponding to the desired roof height so that the non-solvent spreads out across the roof as the desired height is achieved. An arrangement for displacing stored liquid from the cavity using inert fluids both less and more dense than the liquid is described.
