Abstract

1,230,057. Solution-mining of soluble minerals. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 Feb., 1970 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 7749/70. Heading E1F. In order to obtain maximum recovery of salt in the solution mining of salt from a subterranean formation a non-soluble solid is fed into the cavity, which has been formed in the formation by normal solution mining practices, immediately prior to the cavity reaching a size at which collapse of the roof of the cavity would occur; the solid being supplied in quantities sufficient at least to form a pile of a height at least equal to the height of the cavity. This solid, e.g. sand, which preferably fills the cavity, causes displacement from the cavity of profitable salt solution and, for full recovery of salt solution, the salt solution between the pores of the solid when it completely fills the cavity is displaced out of the pore space and out of the cavity by injection into the pore space of a liquid in which neither the solid or the salt is soluble. Control of the shape of the cavity during its formation is by suitable positioning of the lower ends of conduits for feeding aqueous solution or non-saturated salt solutions to withdrawing saturated solution from the cavity, and by the use of roof-controlling solutions in which the salt is not soluble.
