An aqueous drilling fluid of density sufficient to prevent unintentional expulsion of formation fluids comprises two solutes selected from the sodium and potassium salts of orthophosphonic acid. The solutes are selected so that the liquid exhibits a higher density than either of the individual solutes would under the same conditions.
