Abstract

1,137,946. Overbed tables. BORGWARNER CORP. 6 July, 1966 [15 Dec., 1965], No. 30393/66. Heading A4H. In an overbed table, which is vertically adjustable upwards and downwards by hand pressure on the top 12 and includes a tubular member 21 depending from the top and telescoping over a tubular member 20 upstanding from the base and a spring 40 to partially offset the weight of the top, there are provided a setting device, which locks the table in adjusted position and is automatically released for upward movement of the top, and means for releasing the setting device for downward movement of the top. One end of the spring 40 is rotatably supported on a shaft 41 secured between extensions 38 of the member 20 and the other end is engaged by a bracket 43 on the member 21. The setting device consists of a carriage 22 bolted to the member 21 and terminating in a platform 47 apertured for passage of a shaft 24 secured in the member 20 by a plate 25 and bracket 26 and having an arm 52. A brake plate 50 loosely surrounding the shaft 24 is normally horizontally supported on the platform and is urged by a spring 53 to frictionally engage a side of the shaft to prevent vertical movement relatively to the shaft 24 but overcome by upward hand pressure beneath the top. On commencement of the downward movement of the shaft the plate 50 is tilted by the arm 52 to frictionally engage the shaft. The setting device is released by return of the plate to horizontal position by downward movement of the release arm 60 through pivoted links 61, 62 and 63, the link 63 being moved upward against the action of spring 81 by upward movement of the knob 64.
