Abstract

In sheet feeding apparatus wherein sheets are separated from the top of a stack 2 supported by a table 25 which is raised intermittently to keep the top of the stack at a substantially constant height under the control of a detector 1, the power supply to the table lifting means is controlled by a switch 15 which is operated from the detector 1 through first and second movable members 7, 12. The detector 1 comprises a presser foot connected to an arm 30 pivoted at 31, and connected at 29 to one arm 3 of a bellcrank lever 27 pivoted at 28 and rocked by a rotating cam 5: thus, the foot 1 is raised and lowered, and swung sidewise to engage periodically the top of the stack 2. A nose 6 on the arm 3 can act on an arm 8 pivoted at 8a to the first member 7, the arm being adjustable in position by means of a screw 19 and a spring 20. A pin 16 slidable in the member 7 rests on the arm 8, and the upper part has a head in alignment with a member 17 which is mounted for vertical adjustment in the second member 12. The member 7 is periodically rocked about a pivot 9 by a cam 10 and follower 11, and the member 12 is coupled to the member 7 by an adjustment screw 14, and also rocks about the pivot 9. In operation, assuming in the position shown that the member 12 has closed the switch 15 of an electric motor 26 which lifts the table 25, the stack 2 will be raised until the nose 6 of the arm 3 has, through the arm 8, raised the pin 16 until its head engages the member 17, whereupon the members 7, 12 are tilted about the pivot 9 and the switch 15 is opened to stop the lifting of the stack. When the apparatus is in normal use and sheets are separated from the top of the stack by suckers 21, the members 7, 12 are rocked periodically by the cam 10, and the combined detector and presser foot 1 is raised and swung by the cam 5, and the switch 15 is only closed when the detector foot 1 descends below a predetermined level, and during the period when the cam 10 has not tilted the members 7, 12. The energizing circuit of the motor 26 may include a capacitor-potentiometer assembly.
