Abstract

1,137,651. Thermographic materials and processes. KEUFFEL & ESSER CO. May 3, 1966 [May 3,1965], No.19505/66. Heading G2C. A thermographic process comprises coating a coloured or uncoloured support with an uncoloured or coloured polymeric latex to form a fluidpermeable particulate layer, imagewise exposing heat to coalesce the particles and render them fluid impermeable, developing the image with a developer which either decolourizes or colours the uncoalesced areas and/ or the support through the fluid-permeable areas and then optionally removing the uncoalesced particles. In the examples, a regenerated cellulose support is coated with a latex of an acrylate, polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene or polystyrene and dyed with an aqueous solution of dye. The material is imagewise exposed to heat and washed with water to remove the dye from the non-coalesced areas to leave a positive dye image. A negative dye image is obtained when an aqueous dye solution is applied to an undyed and exposed material. The support may be subbed with a gelatine layer which accepts the dye. Multicolour images are produced by coating a support with a latex containing a dye, imagewise exposing and washing to remove dye from uncoalesced areas and then repeating the coating, exposing and washing steps.
