Abstract

1,137,649. Packaging molten materials. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 7 July, 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 35540/66. Heading B8C. Materials, e.g. asphalt, paraffin wax or sulphur, which are solid or semi-solid at ambient temperature, are rendered fluid by heating and deposited from a container 5 on to a sheet 1 of packaging material moving continuously or intermittently in a channel 3, a second sheet 15 is applied and its edges welded to the lower sheet by apparatus 17. Lengths of the filled tube are squeezed by mechanism 19, and their ends are sealed, with the aid of the contained asphalt, and cut to form packages 23. The melted asphalt or other material is pumped through a line 4 to the container 5. On opening valves 6, 7 the asphalt is forced out, by compressed air from a line 8, through sprays 9 so that layers of asphalt are built up on the sheet as it passes the sprays. Cooling air is delivered from a line 11 through jets 12. Packages 23 are cooled by water from sprays 21 and may also be delivered to a water channel 22. A device 24 removes the packages for storage. Packages of different sizes may be formed, e.g. by regulating the amount of filler material deposited on the sheet 1 and altering the frequency of the mechanism 19. The underside of the channel 3 may be cooled. The sheet 1 may be sprayed at 14 with a wetting agent to improve contact with the channel 3. The sheets 1, 15 may be of plastics or " Cellophane " (Trade Mark).
