Descrizione del brevetto per invenzione industriale avente per titolo: Description of the patent for industrial invention entitled:
“PROCEDIMENTO PER LO STOCCAGGIO E LA MOVIMENTAZIONE DI ZOLFO IN BLOCCHI†⠀ œPROCESS FOR STORAGE AND HANDLING OF SULFUR IN BLOCKSâ €
The present invention relates to a process and a system for the storage, destocking and transport of sulfur in blocks. The process of the invention is carried out through controlled pouring and assisted solidification of liquid sulfur in molding forms supported by pallets for handling and transporting the blocks thus obtained.
Sfondo dell’invenzione e stato della tecnica Background of the invention and state of the art
It is common practice to desulphurize natural gas downstream of extraction operations, thereby producing large quantities of sulfur as a by-product. The sulfur is stored, depending on the quantity, liquid in tanks or solidified in large blocks, or tableted or wetly formed into flakes, thus forming masses of the order of tens / hundreds of meters in length and wide, with heights equal to or greater than 10 meters of such as to involve expensive storage / destocking operations. The solid sulfur blocks of large dimensions are generally made by stratifying the sulfur in order to confer mechanical stability, which are then sectioned / crushed with mechanical techniques or liquefied in order to make the accumulated sulfur transportable. Sulfur can be transported in the liquid state in insulated tanks; or in the solid state in the aforementioned forms (tablets, flakes, granules) in order to reduce the release of fines without however completely solving the environmental and safety problems, due to the possibility of crushing and / or release during the handling of powders or spreading of liquid sulfur, with consequent damage to the environment or to people or danger of explosion of the dust emitted. To overcome these problems, the following innovative techniques have recently been proposed for the transport of sulfur in blocks of suitable dimensions: a) production of blocks by means of mechanical operations of water cutting and winding of the blocks obtained in polyethylene sheets; b) packaging and solidification of liquefied sulfur in impermeable containers; c) transport of the sulfur in blocks, structurally reinforced by layering and / or by using structural reinforcements inside / outside the block. The aforementioned techniques represent a progress compared to the previous art but they are not free from problems: water cutting requires the use of a large amount of work for the cutting of the blocks and their handling as well as expensive systems of collection and purification of the cutting water from the sulfur contained in it; the packaging of sulfur in impermeable containers does not solve the problems relating to the use of labor and materials for the packaging, handling and transport of the containers and the unpacking of the sulfur from the containers; finally, the transport of structurally reinforced sulfur requires pouring the sulfur into layers and / or molds with relative removal from the latter, and / or the use of reinforcing material inside or outside the block with an increase in storage / destocking / transport costs due to the greater use of labor and / or materials.
CA2551370 describes a process for the storage of sulfur by forming blocks obtained inside confinement panels made of heat insulating material, in order to slow down the solidification process and thus increase the surface resistance of the blocks.

US2010 / 0031609 describes procedures for the transport of sulfur in blocks, where these blocks are water-cut in dimensions suitable for transport and wrapped in polyethylene sheets.
WO2010 / 022499 describes a method for the transport of sulfur in reinforced blocks through cooling and solidification in layers of the liquid sulfur, possibly with the addition of solid reinforcement structures or external protective coating.

Descrizione dell’invenzione Description of the invention
We have now found a process for the formation of solid sulfur blocks suitable for transport and storage, which, compared to known techniques, has the following advantages: (i) it does not require impermeable containers, crushing, liquefaction or cutting operations in the production and storage sites, (ii) does not require structural reinforcements, (iii) reduces the use of materials and labor thanks to the shaping and simultaneous housing on pallets (â € œpalletizationâ €) of the sulfur blocks obtained by assisted casting / solidification in formwork, (iv) allows the control of the mechanical characteristics of the stored sulfur, thus minimizing the release of fines in storage, handling and transport operations.
The object of the present invention is a process for the preparation of blocks of sulfur of a size and shape suitable for storage, handling and transport, through the controlled pouring of molten sulfur into a forming and cooling formwork supported by a pallet.
Più in particolare il procedimento dell’invenzione comprende i seguenti stadi: More specifically, the process of the invention includes the following stages:
a) predisposizione di una cassaforma sostenuta da un bancale idoneo alla movimentazione e trasporto; a) preparation of a formwork supported by a pallet suitable for handling and transport;
b) colatura di zolfo all’interno di detta cassaforma sostenuta dal bancale, in modo che si abbia un accrescimento del livello di zolfo in detta cassaforma inferiore a 50 cm/ora e preferibilmente compreso tra 10 cm/ora e 1 cm/ora, ad una temperatura di colatura preferibilmente inferiore a 130°C; b) pouring of sulfur inside said formwork supported by the pallet, so that there is an increase in the level of sulfur in said formwork of less than 50 cm / hour and preferably between 10 cm / hour and 1 cm / hour, at a casting temperature preferably lower than 130 ° C;
c) raffreddamento e solidificazione dello zolfo in blocchi all’interno di detta cassaforma. c) cooling and solidification of the sulfur in blocks inside said formwork.
Preferably, the cooling and solidification of the sulfur in blocks are carried out by controlling the density of the sulfur poured into the formwork, the average density being correlated to the mechanical characteristics of the sulfur block. The density of the sulfur blocks can be measured using suitable detection devices, for example, those based on the use of ultrasounds. According to the invention, the average density of the block being formed is controlled by one or more of the following techniques: a) mixing of the liquid sulfur on the surface of the block being formed preferably by induction of continuous or pulsed elastic waves / vibrations in the poured sulfur ; b) regulation of the rate of increase of the sulfur level in the formwork; c) regulation of the casting temperature; d) cooling of the sulfur in the formwork, for example, by direct / indirect heat exchange with suitable cooling fluids or cooling by convection. The mixing of the molten sulfur between its external surface and its internal layers in the fluid state improves the heat exchange of the liquid with the outside, at the same time releasing any gas / air bubbles contained in it and inhibiting, in the solidification process, the formation of stratifications in rigid crusts characterized by discontinuous, crumbly interiors and characterized by voids. In this way blocks are obtained, even of large dimensions, with greater density, stability and mechanical resistance for handling and transport. This mixing can be carried out mechanically through the movement of suitable devices using vanes or other, or preferably through the continuous and / or pulsed application of elastic waves / vibrations in the poured sulfur having suitable intensity and frequency. Said application of elastic waves to the sulfur in forming can, for example, be carried out inside the sulfur by immersion through vibrating tips or outside the sulfur in forming, vibrating bases, wall vibrators, with mechanical devices (for example for example with eccentric vibratory motorbikes), pneumatic, electric, by means of ultrasonic devices, or other known techniques.
The pallets for handling and transporting the sulfur blocks according to the present invention can be â € œpalettesâ € of standardized dimensions and characteristics according to international standards and having the upper surface impermeable to molten molten sulfur or made waterproof by overlapping an impermeable material. . The sulfur seal inside the formwork is ensured by the solidification process on the surface of the block being formed, which prevents the liquid sulfur from escaping from the side walls, or by means of gaskets / joints.
The pallets for handling and transport and the forming formworks can be equipped, according to the type of use, with holes, joints or devices for quick mutual anchoring or for fixing waterproof surfaces or protections.
The formwork can be mobile or fixed, consisting of disposable or reusable walls or bulkheads for forming further blocks of sulfur on site, or such as to constitute an integral whole between blocks and pallets in order to protect the contents and / or minimize the release of fines during handling or transport.
Said formwork can be made in a single piece consisting of one or more materials or by conveniently assembling panels made of one or more materials or by assembling mobile panels to fixed or permanent structures. The opening / closing of the formwork and the operations of separating the blocks or pallets from the formwork or their walls / bulkheads can be, depending on the case, automatic or manual. The handling and transport of the sulfur on the pallets from the forming site to the loading can take place thanks to automatic devices and similarly the handling of the pallets from the warehouses to the formwork site can be automated. Finally, it is possible to package said pallets supporting the sulfur in blocks with fine protection and containment material.

A block of sulfur is formed in a formwork placed on a standardized pallet with 4 entrances (1016 mm x 1219 mm x 150 mm) whose upper surface is made impermeable to pouring by means of a cardboard sheet having a thickness of 3 mm and a base of 1016 mm. x 1219 mm. The formation takes place through continuous casting under control of level increase (15 mm / hour) and temperature (125 ° C), in order to ensure effective cooling by natural convection and optimal solidification / density of the block. The formwork for forming is made up of 4 interlocking aluminum panels having a height of 850 mm. In about 48 hours of continuous casting the sulfur is completely solidified, it has reached the temperature for handling (below 90 ° C) and the predetermined level of 720 mm such as to guarantee a sulfur content equal to or greater than 1.7 tons in the formwork . At this point the aluminum formwork is opened by separating the panels from the pallet, then the sulfur block is covered with a protective sheet, moved by forklift and loaded directly onto the container for transport. In this way, a plant equipped with suitable steam-traced loading arms enslaved to 30 casting islands, each containing 10 blocks, in the block casting / forming state, guarantees a sulfur productivity exceeding 500 tons / day.
Esempio 2 Example 2
A block of sulfur having the following dimensions (6500 mm x 2300 mm x 500 mm) is formed in a formwork placed on a handling pallet, with multiple entries and suitably sized for static and dynamic loading during the loading, handling and transport phases . Said pallet, having a waterproof upper surface, is equipped with quick joints / hooks for the side containment panels made of heat-resistant polymeric material. Protective material is interposed between the lateral containment panels constituting the formwork and the sulfur being poured (for example cardboard in sheets). The formation and solidification of said block takes place through continuous casting in control of level increase and casting temperature, with cooling of the block by forced convection through ventilation until an average temperature of less than 80 ° C is reached. At this point, said pallet supporting the solidified sulfur block weighing more than 13.9 tons is separated from the side panels and moved, laterally wrapped by the protective cartons, by forklift and loaded directly into a transport container of standardized type â € œheavy dutyâ. €.
Esempio 3 Example 3
A block of sulfur having a height of 810 mm and a weight greater than 1.4 tons is formed in a formwork placed on a standardized pallet (1200 mm x 800 mm x 144 mm) with an impervious upper surface for pouring. The formwork placed on the pallet consists of 4 interlocking aluminum panels having a height of 1000 mm. The formation is vibro assisted with the application of elastic waves of appropriate frequency and intensity and takes place through continuous casting and in control of the level and temperature increase of the casting. The block is cooled by natural convection until it is completely solidified at an average temperature below 90 ° C. Subsequently the block of sulfur thus obtained is moved for transport.
Esempio 4 Example 4
A quantity of sulfur of the same weight is obtained as in the previous example 3 and placed on a pallet with the same characteristics of example 3, being said quantity of sulfur previously divided into sub-blocks placed on the same pallet thanks to the insertion, during the controlled and vibro-assisted casting process, of two orthogonal dividers, made of suitable material, such as cardboard, so as to divide the quantity of sulfur into 4 sub-blocks of equal size and each having a weight greater than about 350 kg.
