Abstract
690,229. Packaging. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd., BAZIN, R. E., and YOULE, F. April 19, 1951 [Jan. 20, 1950], No. 1604/50. Class 94(i) A method of packaging a granular, liquid or other commodity comprises the steps of passing a portion only of a length of thermoplastic material in strip form to a folding means to produce a tubular formation with overlapping edges, sealing said edges by dielectric welding to produce a tube, sealing one end of this tube by dielectric welding to produce a tubularcontainer which is sealed at one end, introducing such commodity into said container, sealing the other end of said container by dielectric welding and repeating such steps in respect of another portion of the length of material in order to produce a succession of commodity-loaded packages. A strip 6 of polyvinyl chloride is fed down between inner and outer tubular members 1, 2 which form the strip into a tube which is sealed longitudinally by a bar 8 to which and the inner tubular member 1 is applied a highfrequency electric -field to seal the strip by dielectric heating. The leading end of the tube of wrapping material thus produced is closed by cooperating transverse dielectric heating elements 11, 12. The tube of wrapping material is then moved down a suitable amount and a commodity fed thereto from a pipe 15, through the inner tubular member 1. The transverse sealing of. a succeeding container or pocket by the elements 11, 12 serves at the same time to close the first, filled, container which may be severed from the strip by knife blades 17. Alternatively, the strip between consecutive containers may be weakened, for example by perforations. According to the Provisional Specification the shape of the container may be such that its lower end terminates in a point or has a small cross-sectional area, in which cases the longitudinal seam may effect complete closure of the container without the necessity of transverse welds.
