Abstract

1,115,636. Packaging-machines; packages. W. S. SCHNEIDER, and A. P. CORELLA. 29 July, 1965 [21 Aug., 1964], No. 32501/65. Heading B8C. A flexible dispensing package 10 for liquid, granulated, or other fluent substances, comprises a tube of flexible heat sealable material having transverse seals 11, (17) at each end, the lower seal (17), Fig. 4 (not shown), being folded over and the package end flattened to form a base. The tube is formed by shaping a web around a mandrel (28), Fig. 10 (not shown), and the bottom is sealed by heated jaws (34); a reciprocating plunger (31), which may be of circular or polygonal shape, is lowered from within the mandrel to form a base of the desired shape. In so doing, two triangular folds (37), Fig. 12 (not shown), are formed in the tube at the ends of the seam (17), which are then pressed down by plungers (38) against a heated base-plate (36) to fold the seam (17) against the base, and to form stabilizing portions (22) along two sides of the package. In the embodiment of Figs. 6-9 (not shown), the tube is formed with a longitudinal seam (20a) providing extensions of the seams 11, (17) and the package has additional stabilizing portions (49) around the two remaining sides of the base. In the embodiments of Figs. 14-18 (not shown), the package is formed with a circular base, the extensions (37) being folded under the base before being sealed between the plunger (31) and a heated sealing plate (51).
